Satinwood And Japanned Chinese Chippendale Style Armchair

A simply wonderful satinwood armchair by Hille & Co, in the ''Chinese'' taste, designed and crafted to the highest grade. The arched back centred with a Chinoiserie scene, painted arms with lattice supports above a caned seat with velvet cushion above a gothic inspired fret carved frieze and legs, joined by a H-stretcher. Serial number to the underneath, C. 1920
The firm of Hille was founded in 1906 by Salamon Hille. Their Old Street manufactory aimed at high quality production with an emphasis on materials and craftsmanship. They produced furniture in a number of revivalist tastes supplying makers such as Hamptons, Maples and Waring and Gillows. The Chippendale revival Chinoiserie decorated furniture was introduced around 1914. Salamon''s daughter Ray, who was to become a notable designer in her own right producing the firms acclaimed ''Art Deco'' and ''Moderne'' ranges, Ray began her career at Hille painting the chinoiserie designs on these revivalist pieces.
Provenance: Privat...e family collection, Berkshire.
Offered in exceptionally good condition for the period of chair. Some wear and fade to the cushion. very minor old chips, knocks and marks consistent with age. Original caning in good tight condition.
