Yew Broad Arm Rocking Windsor

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: William Carr Antiques

A highly rare and unusual Yew wood broad arm Windsor rocking chair, most likely from the Yorkshire region, C.1840.

The chair displays extremely crisp turnings with three narrow rings echoing each other between the underarm turnings, very fine legs and H-stretcher also. The fretted splats fit broadly into the Yorkshire tradition and style, however nothing quite alike has been documented with inset triangles such as these. There was a trend or practise in Yorkshire of experimenting with very varied designs of turnings: not many of these have been discovered with makers stamps.

A big thanks to some local wisdom in Julian Parker & John Gall in attempts to identify this special piece. The chair may shortly be appearing in the Regional Furniture Society newsletter.
