A Satin Birch And Marquetry Inlaid Chair By Henry Thomas Peters, Genoa

A rare and tasteful example by the Savoia Court Cabinet-Maker Henry Thomas Peters of Genoa, C.1835. Recovered in buttoned green cotton, the over stuffed serpentine seat above an inlaid seat rail, on turned and tapering forelegs with brass-capped toes and casters.
 
Peters arrived in Genoa in 1817, by 1824 he had established a workshop in Via Balbi, a neighbourhood in which the Royal Palace and other noble residences were located; today some of his works are preserved in the Palazzo Rosso, Genoa. He received a silver medal in 1846 at the Genoa Great Exhibition of National Manufactures and Products.
 
Peters was employed under the Piedmontese architect Pelagio Pelagi at the Palazzo Reale, Turin and at Castello Reale di Racconigi. Peters was famed for producing furniture with the technical accuracy typical of English but adapted to the late Italian Empire style, a set of six Italian Giltwood Chairs by Peters realised a sum of £93,750 at Christies London sale 22nd March 2017 Lot 443.
