Howard & Sons Ivor Armchair

1900 - 1920
Description

A Tremendous Late 19th Century deep-seated Howard & Sons Ivor Armchair, covered in original ticking, with squab cushion and plain seat rail, on shell-carved and acanthus cabriole forelegs with ball and claw feet, the rear leg stamped Howard & Sons Ltd, Berners Street, 5988559.

Howard & Sons were established in 1820 by John Howard and the family business became an iconic name in Victorian England, the company began gathering accolades which raised their profile and secured them private clients. They won a prize at the prestigious Crystal Palace Exhibition of 1862 for their suite of library furniture. Shortly after they became a limited company in 1899 and won their first royal warrant in 1901. Their warrant allowed them to supply royal residences with upholstered furniture, alongside other grand venues such as The Savoy Hotel.

The company's most famous residence was at Berners Street in London, where they would eventually occupy numbers 25, 26 and 27. Many of their pieces are therefore signed, 'Howard & Sons Ltd, Berners Street.' Still to this day the company carries the most prestigious name with her Majesty the Queen holding a huge private collection of these chairs herself.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
