Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian tobacco or snuff box is a small pocket-sized container crafted during the Georgian era, spanning 1714 to 1830. These boxes were used to store loose tobacco or powdered snuff leaf and were frequently decorated with hand engraving, chasing, or tortoiseshell inlays.

During the Regency and late Georgian periods, metalworkers primarily used brass, copper alloys, sterling silver, rolled gold, and pewter. Decorative accoutrements were also fashionably constructed from horn, papier-mache, pressed wood, or mother-of-pearl.

Authentic Georgian brass boxes typically feature hand-cut five-bar or three-bar hinges, hand-engraved surface decoration rather than machine stamping, and signs of uneven wear or surface oxidisation inside the rim. Lids often snap tightly shut without modern spring mechanisms.

Small antique brass containers serve as functional desk accessories for paperclips, decorative accents stacked on books, or interest pieces arranged on a tray atop a coffee table or sideboard.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes that strip away original patina. Light application of microcrystalline wax preserves the metal against humidity and fingerprints.
