Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 19th-century black lacquered jewellery box is a decorative storage chest featuring layered sap resin coatings, often inspired by East Asian techniques. During the Victorian era, these pieces were popular import items and local adaptations showcasing Chinoiserie artwork and gilded decoration.

These boxes were constructed with a softwood or hardwood core, sealed with tree resin lacquer, and decorated with metal leaf or gold paint. Hardware typically consisted of cast or stamped brass plates, hinges, and lock mechanisms, while interiors and lids often incorporated silk or velvet padding.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural age-related craquelure within the varnish, hand-cut brass fittings with minor irregularities, and period-correct joinery such as fine dovetails. Genuine lacquer displays depth and weight distinct from modern acrylic or synthetic finishes.

Place the box on a dressing table, sideboard, or bedside console to add historical contrast against contemporary surfaces. Its dark finish and gilded details complement curated vignettes featuring ceramics, books, and metal accent pieces.

Keep the item away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity shifts, and central heating sources to prevent wood movement and lacquer cracking. Clean the lacquered surfaces gently with a dry microfibre cloth and avoid water or solvent cleaners on silk elements.
