Military Campaign Camphor Wood Roll Top Writing Slope

£825    $1,037    €990
Fantastic 19th Century military campaign roll top writing slope / lap desk constructed of solid camphor wood with brass binding to all edges. There is a central brass plaque to the fall which match the shape of the flush brass inset carrying handles and small inset handle to the front which has original lock and key. As the lower drawer is pulled open it activates the roll top mechanism at the top of the box to slide back to reveal a pop-up compartment. Wooden spring levers either side lock the pop-up section in place which hold a bank of pigeonholes. Pressing the side levers inwards lowers the pop-up section. The writing stope is lined with green baize which holds a secret, that is activated by the use of a steel peg pushed into a hole which pops open a compartment revealing 2 concealed drawers. The box is a beautiful mellow camphor wood colour with amazing patination that can only be achieved through years of use and care. In excellent condition with only minor marks/ scuffs but nothing significant considering the age. An extremely functional item that will look superb in a variety of locations.
