Shirley Low Stick Back Windsor

A rare Low stick back Windsor chair by William Shirley of Grantham. (C.1814-1842) Yew, with elm seat stamped on top rear surface of seat. The crinoline stretcher is extremely rare in this style of chair. The name Shirley carries a strong repertoire in Lincolnshire, both father and son William Shirley senior and junior learnt their craft as chair makers in Grantham. William Shirley junior then took his knowledge and skills to Caistor in 1843, eventually owning his own workshop and yard.
