This late 19th-century Dutch Baroque display cupboard takes the form of a tall painted wooden cabinet standing 203 cm high, 112 cm wide, and 39 cm deep. The piece has a black finish over its timber construction, complemented by glass in the doors and brass hardware on the drawers. The upper section comprises glazed mullioned doors with grid patterns, set below an arched carved cornice featuring a central top carving. The lower section has a curvaceous bombe base with three drawers fitted with decorative brass pull handles and escutcheons, all supported by claw feet. Inside the display area, the shelves show gold-toned trim against white backing. The cabinet suits placement in a gentleman's library or similar traditional interior space for the display of collections.

Dutch bombe furniture is distinguished by its outward-curving, convex lower body, which originated in the Netherlands during the 18th century and reflects Baroque and Rococo influences.

These cabinets were typically constructed using solid hardwoods such as oak or walnut, fitted with glass panelling, brass drop handles, and occasionally finished with painted surfaces.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joinery, hand-blown glass panes with subtle imperfections, original brass hardware, and distinctive shaped pediments or carved cornices.

Positioning a dark painted cabinet against a neutral wall allows its silhouette to serve as a architectural statement, providing contrast while displaying glassware, ceramics, or literature inside.

Maintain painted timber by dusting regularly with a soft lint-free cloth, avoiding liquid chemicals or harsh abrasives, and maintaining consistent indoor humidity levels to prevent timber movement.
