19thc Mahogany Writing Box / Slope

19th century
For Sale by Limited Editions
Description

A very looking writing box or writing slope from the first half of the 19th Century. Some use related marks of course but overall in good condition with good colour and bright finish. We have cleaned and rewaxed this and put a new beize on the base. It is a bit special this one in that it has a number of features many do not. There is a key but the lock does not seem to be operational but there is a new hide on the writing slope which has a space for an ink well and next to that space for pens. There is a pin cushion, use before staplers of course, in the storage space under the slope are two neat little drawers for your personal bits and pieces. Upon opening the top there is a drop down facia which is in front of another space for letters and notes. A feature that appeals to us is the pair of lovely little recessed handles. super little item that. This could easily have been a campaign writing box and if it could talk may well have many an interesting story to tell. all in all a bit special this little example and very sensible price too

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A writing slope is a portable wooden box designed with a hinged, angled lid that unfolds to create a sloped surface for writing letters. Popular during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, these boxes allowed travellers to store paper, inkwells, pens, and documents securely while on the move.

Writing slopes were commonly constructed from hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, often lined internally with velvet or skiver leather writing surfaces. Brass bindings, corner brackets, straps, and escutcheons were frequently applied to strengthen the structure and protect against impact during transit.

Authentic nineteenth-century writing slopes typically feature hand-cut dovetail joints, flush-fitting brass campaign hardware, and period locks. Original pieces show natural wear, patination on the brass components, and historical shrinkage or surface marks consistent with age and wood movement.

A mahogany writing slope works well as a decorative accent placed flat on an office desk, coffee table, or sideboard. It can also be displayed open on a deep bookshelf or console table to showcase internal secret compartments or contrasting interior linings.

Keep the box away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood warping or finish fading. Clean the timber using a soft dry cloth and apply natural beeswax sparingly to preserve the lustre, avoiding harsh chemical polishes on brass hardware.
