Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Hongmu open cabinets originated during the Ming and Qing dynasties as essential furnishings for scholars and collectors. Designed with asymmetrical open shelving, these cabinets were intended to display prized objects, jade, ceramics, and scholar stones while demonstrating refined taste.

Traditional pieces are crafted from dense tropical hardwoods, collectively termed hongmu, known for their deep reddish-brown colour and weight. Craftsmen utilized intricate floating panel construction and precision mortise and tenon joinery without the use of metal nails or glue.

Authentic examples feature traditional hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery, natural wear consistent with age around handles and footrests, hand-carved relief detailing, and substantial weight due to the density of the hardwood.

A carved open cabinet serves as a focal statement piece in contemporary rooms. Placing art books, minimalist ceramics, or curated collections on the asymmetrical shelves creates a balanced contrast against sleek, modern architectural elements.

Dust regularly using a dry, soft microfiber cloth and a natural bristle brush to clear dust from intricate carved crevices. Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent the timber from splitting or warping.
