A cushion mirror features a central plate surrounded by angled, smaller panes of glass that slope outward toward the frame, creating a pillow-like or cushion effect. Originating in 17th and 18th-century Europe, this design gained popularity in France and England for its ability to refract candlelight and illuminate rooms.

These pieces typically consist of a pine or hardwood structural carcase fitted with hand-carved wooden ornaments and applied gesso. Artisans hand-applied gold leaf or paint over the gesso base, often incorporating mercury glass plates held in place by wooden backing boards.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-cut glass with slight imperfections, foxing, or oxidisation on the mirror plate. The frame construction should show traditional joinery, hand-carved detailing rather than modern resin moulds, and aged gesso that displays natural cracking over time.

Positioning the mirror opposite a window maximises natural light and creates an illusion of depth in contemporary spaces. It serves as a striking focal point when hung above a fireplace mantel or used as a full-length leaner mirror against a neutral wall.

Dust the frame gently with a soft, dry brush and avoid chemical cleaning agents that can strip the original gilt or paintwork. Clean the glass sparingly using a microfibre cloth and a mild, non-ammonia glass cleaner applied to the cloth rather than directly onto the mirror surface.
