This French Empire side cabinet from 1850 exemplifies formal nineteenth-century design. Constructed from figured Spanish flame mahogany, the timber displays rich reddish brown tones with distinct flame grain patterns across the bow-front doors and sides. The piece is crowned with a variegated reddish-pink marble top featuring a shaped demilune profile. Architectural column supports flank the cabinet, accented with gilded bronze ormolu capitals and bases, while matching neoclassical ormolu mounts and foliate escutcheons adorn the frieze and cupboard doors. Standing neatly on turned feet, the cabinet accommodates storage behind its central doors. Measuring 103 cm high, 158 cm wide, and 80 cm deep, this substantial furnishing makes a grand statement placed against a principal wall in a formal dining room, hallway, or living space to display decorative objects or store tableware.

Originating during the reign of Napoleon I in the early 19th century, French Empire furniture is characterised by neoclassical proportions, symmetry, rich mahogany veneers, architectural columns, and gilded bronze mounts.

Empire cabinets typically feature solid or veneered flame mahogany, thick marble tops such as rouge or grey varieties, and decorative ormolu architectural fittings.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved dovetail joints, original oak or pine drawer linings, heavy cast-bronze mounts with hand-chased details, and dense marble tops cut during the period.

Place the cabinet against a neutral wall as a focal anchor, pairing its dark mahogany tones with contemporary monochrome artwork or minimal ceramic decor to balance the classical ornamentation.

Clean the marble surface using a pH-neutral cleaner designed for natural stone, while dusting the wood veneer regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and applying a natural beeswax polish annually.
