Penlington & Batty Carriage Clock

19th century
For Sale by Its About Time
Description

A gilded timepiece carriage clock retailed by Penlington & Batty around 1890. Curved and bevelled side glasses, with an unusual off white enamel dial showing fancy Arabic numerals. Wound once a week with a key. This clock does have a small chip to the right side glass which can be seen in the pictures and a minor chip to the top glass, however these are only noticeable upon close inspection and we feel it would be a shame to replace them. The clock has benefited from a complete overhaul and is sold with a full 12 month guarantee.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Developed in France during the early nineteenth century, carriage clocks were designed for travellers who needed a durable, portable timepiece. They feature sturdy brass cases, glass panels, top carrying handles, and spring-driven movements with platform escapements that function reliably whilst in motion.

Traditional carriage clocks are constructed with brass cases that are often gilded or polished, thick bevelled glass side panels to reveal the movement, and porcelain or enamel dials with hand-painted numerals.

Authentic period carriage clocks typically feature heavy cast brass construction, bevelled glass panels rather than plastic, hand-lettered or high-fired enamel dials, and stamped maker details on the movement plates or dial face.

Position the timepiece on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or executive office desk where light can pass through the glass panels. Its warm metallic brass finish complements both classic dark wood furniture and minimalist contemporary backdrops.

Keep the clock in a dry, dust-free environment and wind the mechanism gently with a correctly fitted key. Clean the brass and glass exterior using a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh liquid cleaners or abrasives that might strip protective lacquers or enter the mechanical movement.
