Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century Venetian mirrors are characteristically ornate, drawing heavy influence from eighteenth-century Rococo styling. They typically feature hand-carved wood frames, gesso embellishments, polychrome painted ground colours, water-gilded details, and undulating, asymmetrical crestings decorated with floral cartouches.

These mirrors were constructed using carved softwoods coated in layers of gesso to create a smooth base for polychrome paint and water gilding with gold leaf. The reflective plates were traditionally made from silvered glass set into separate panels within the frame structure.

Authentic pieces display hand-carved joinery, original timber backing boards, and natural age-related craquelure or chipping in the gesso and paint layers. Additionally, authentic silvered mirror glass from the period often exhibits mild desilveration, dark spotting, or subtle oxidation around the edges.

Place the mirror above a fireplace mantel or atop a hallway console table to serve as a central architectural statement. Combining the rich painted finish and gilded detail with neutral walls and contemporary tailored upholstery creates a balanced, eclectic contrast.

Dust the frame regularly with a dry, soft camel-hair brush to prevent dirt buildup in carved details. Avoid liquid spray cleaners or damp cloths on painted gesso and gilded surfaces, as moisture can dissolve historic glue binders and lift delicate gold leaf.
