Description

Yew wood Windsor chair with elm seat. An interesting chair, almost certainly from the Retford area. It displays some features which are associated with the important chair making centre of Rockley, 5 miles south of Retford. In particular the flattened arm supports and through morticing of the spindles. The only marked examples of the latter feature are by William Wheatland who set up the Rockley workshop in 1825 although no certain attribution is possible without a name stamp.

Lovely rich colour, an attractive example of an early nineteenth century yew wood Windsor chair.

Restoration to the bottom of the front left leg. Some worm holes in the seat (treated).
