Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian display cabinets from the mid-to-late nineteenth century were designed to exhibit porcelain, glass, and curiosities. They frequently features glass panel doors, internal shelves, rich mahogany wood framing, and a mirrored back panel or superstructure designed to reflect ambient light into the interior.

These cabinets were primarily constructed using solid hardwoods such as mahogany or walnut, complemented by hand-cut glass panels, mirror plates, and brass door fittings. Internal shelves were traditionally made of timber or heavy float glass supported by metal clips or wooden ledges.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail or mortise and tenon joinery, original brass locks, and solid secondary woods like pine or oak on backboards and drawer linings. Early mirror backs may show faint oxidisation or age spots along the silvering.

Place the cabinet against a neutral or boldly painted wall to create visual contrast. Fill the interior shelves with a curated mix of modern ceramics, art books, or glassware to balance historic timber tones with modern aesthetic elements.

Dust the exterior wood regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax periodically in the direction of the grain. Clean the glass and mirror panels using a mild glass cleaner applied directly to a cloth, avoiding contact with surrounding woodwork.
