A Chesterfield armchair is traditionally characterised by deep buttoned or diamond-tufted upholstery, rolled arms, and a substantial back profile. Originating in 18th-century England, the style became a staple of British clubhouses and traditional study rooms throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Early 20th-century upholstered seating generally features solid hardwood frames, such as beech or oak, fitted with webbed or coil-sprung seat construction. Upholstery materials included natural hides, early synthetic coated fabrics like Rexine, or wool damasks, supported on turned timber legs with metal castors.

Authentic 1920s English armchairs often display hand-turned wood legs, cast iron or brass castors, and traditional frame joinery like mortise and tenon. Inspecting the underside reveals hand-bound coil springs, hessian webbing, and period-appropriate stuffing materials such as horsehair or coconut fibre.

A red upholstered armchair serves as a strong focal point when set against neutral wall palettes like charcoal grey, muted olive, or off-white. Balance the visual weight of the piece by pairing it with a streamlined modern floor lamp and an understated wool rug.

Regularly wipe the surface with a soft, slightly dampened microfibre cloth to remove dust without soaking the material. Avoid harsh chemical solvents or abrasive cleaners, and position the armchair away from direct sunlight and radiator heat sources to prevent surface cracking or fading.
