Antique Georgian Mahogany Cabinet Bookcase with Drawers

19th century
Description

A superb quality antique Georgian mahogany cabinet bookcase with drawers, dating from the George III period, displaying beautiful rich colour, exceptional mahogany figuring and elegant proportions.

The upper section features a finely detailed dentil cornice above an attractive crossbanded frieze. Two beautifully figured flame mahogany panelled doors open to reveal a spacious interior fitted with three adjustable shelves, providing excellent storage for books, documents or treasured collections.

The lower section incorporates three generously proportioned, full-width drawers, each finished with traditional cockbeaded edges and retaining its original decorative brass swan neck handles and escutcheons. The whole stands on original shaped bracket feet, completing its handsome Georgian appearance.

The quality of the mahogany is particularly impressive, with striking grain patterns across the panelled doors and a lovely depth of colour throughout. The combination of elegant architectural detailing, beautifully figured timber and practical storage makes this a splendid example of Georgian cabinetmaking.

An exceptionally versatile piece of antique furniture that would make a wonderful addition to a library, drawing room, study or bedroom, offering generous storage whilst bringing warmth, character and timeless elegance to any interior.

This Georgian linen press dates from the George III period around 1800 and is constructed from solid mahogany and flame mahogany veneer with brass hardware. The exterior displays a warm mahogany brown colour with rich figuring across the twin panelled upper doors and lower drawer fronts, complemented by a dentil moulding cornice above, cockbeaded drawer edges, decorative brass swan-neck handles with matching escutcheons, and ogee bracket feet. It measures 208 cm high, 111 cm wide and 25 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this versatile storage piece functions well in a library, drawing room, study or bedroom. The upper section provides enclosed shelving for books and papers, while the three graduated full-width drawers below offer generous capacity for linens, clothing or household items, bringing traditional character and practical storage to an interior space.

A Georgian linen press cabinet is a traditional piece of 18th-century English storage furniture, featuring an upper cupboard section with doors mounted above a lower chest of drawers.

Georgian furniture of this era typically features solid mahogany framing with figured flame mahogany door veneers, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, and secondary timber linings such as pine or oak.

Authentic Georgian cabinets display signs of hand-planed secondary timbers, hand-cut dovetails, period-appropriate brass escutcheons or handles, and natural surface patination consistent with age.

A substantial mahogany cabinet functions well as a focal piece in a hallway, bedroom, or dining room, providing enclosed storage while complementing both traditional and modern decor schemes.

Dust regularly with a soft cloth and apply clear beeswax polish periodically along the wood grain, keeping the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent shrinkage or movement.
