Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1920s:
Gilt paint worn thin on armrests and cresting: long handling over time.
Pierced geometric fretwork backs: Chinese Chippendale forms in revival cabinetmaking.
Hand-painted garden pavilions and figures: detailed decorative work on black ground.
Carved ball and claw feet: crisp early Georgian styling under original paint.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This pair of Chinoiserie armchairs dates from the 1920 period in a grand Regency style. The timber frames carry a black lacquer finish with hand-painted gold and gilt detailing, complemented by light gold and yellow patterned fabric upholstery on the seats. Each armchair incorporates a circular fretwork backrest decorated with gold painted motifs, shaped armrests, and cabriole front legs terminating in ball and claw feet, showing surface wear and character throughout. Measuring 78 cm high, 59 cm wide, and 56 cm deep, these compact occasional chairs suit placement in a bedroom, drawing room, or hallway. They function well as standalone statement seating or supplementary furniture in traditional interior settings.

Chinoiserie is a European decorative style originating in the seventeenth century that incorporates Chinese-inspired motifs, dark lacquering, gilding, and stylized depictions of natural landscapes and figures.

These armchairs are typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as beech or mahogany, finished with coats of dark lacquer or varnish, detailed with gilt paint, and fitted with upholstered drop-in or fixed seats.

Authentic pieces feature hand-applied gilding showing natural surface wear, raised lacquered brushwork, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, and evidence of historical hand-crafting on the structural timber frame.

Placing a pair of Chinoiserie armchairs alongside a console table or framing a fireplace creates visual contrast against modern wall finishes while adding historic texture to modern living spaces.

Dust surfaces regularly using a dry microfibre cloth, avoid solvent-based polish or water on lacquer, and keep items positioned away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent cracking.
