Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This traditional Chinese games box dates from 1900 and is fashioned from warm brown hardwood with visible grain, complemented by bright brass hardware. The rectangular wooden case displays dovetail joints, shrinkage cracks, metal corner mounts, and an overhead bail handle, alongside a lift-up sliding front panel with inlaid Chinese characters. The exterior also shows wear to the sliding door and slight lifting to a couple of metal corners, giving the piece an authentic antique character. Measuring 17 cm high, 24 cm wide, and 16.5 cm deep, this compact games box sits neatly on a sideboard top in a gentleman's library, study, or living room. It functions both as an intriguing decorative accent and as a practical storage container for display or everyday use.

FAQs

A traditional Chinese mahjong box is a purpose-built wooden carrying chest, historically designed with sliding front panels and internal drawers to house mahjong tiles, counting sticks, and dice.

These boxes were predominantly constructed from dense Asian hardwoods such as rosewood, zitan, or huali, reinforced with cast brass corner braces, carrying handles, and decorative lock plates.

Authentic pieces feature dovetail or mortise-and-tenon joinery, hand-carved or inlaid Chinese character panels, original brass hardware with natural oxidisation, and fitted internal drawer compartments.

Display the wooden box as an accent piece on a sideboard, coffee table, or library shelf, pairing dark timber tones with neutral ceramics or framed artwork.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft cloth, apply a microcrystalline wax polish to protect the timber and brass, and avoid placement near direct heat sources or high humidity.
