Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Edwardian elbow chair dates from around 1905 and belongs to the English Country House style. Constructed from dark brown mahogany with contrasting satinwood marquetry inlay, the piece displays a vase splat, curved armrests, and an upholstered seat covered in light beige textured fabric trimmed with braided fringe. Further ornamental details include floral marquetry panels on the crest rail and central splat, alongside moulded front legs. The chair measures 56 cm wide at the widest point across the seat by 84 cm high, and remains in good original condition with the original upholstery, though it has spent many years in storage. Suitable for placement in a hallway or bedroom, this armchair provides comfortable seating while complementing traditional interior schemes. The compact proportions allow it to fit into smaller corners or accent spaces without overwhelming the room. Householders can use the chair as a practical seat for putting on shoes near an entryway or as a decorative bedroom furnishing. The dark timber finish and subtle inlaid motifs blend harmoniously with period furniture collections.

FAQs

Edwardian seating, produced between 1901 and 1910, frequently drew inspiration from 18th-century Neo-Classical and Sheraton designs. Pieces typically feature lighter mahogany frames, delicate satinwood marquetry inlays, sweeping arms, and slender leg proportions.

Mahogany served as the primary timber for chair framing, decorated with contrasting satinwood or boxwood marquetry inlays. Seats were traditionally upholstered using webbed bases and natural fillings, finished in woven fabrics, damask, or silk.

Authentic Edwardian furniture displays precise joinery such as mortise and tenon joints with light signs of natural timber shrinkage around frame connections. True marquetry features wood veneers flush-set into the mahogany surface rather than printed or surface-applied motifs.

An Edwardian chair functions as a distinct accent piece when placed in a modern hallway, study, or alongside contemporary upholstered sofas. Re-covering the seat pad in a contemporary linen or textured neutral fabric bridges the gap between traditional craftsmanship and modern decor.

Keep mahogany furniture away from direct heat sources and prolonged sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage and veneer lifting. Dust surfaces regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and apply beeswax polish sparingly along the grain to preserve the wood finish.
