This 18th century Georgian longcase clock by John Owen of Llanrwst is made from dark brown oak with brass and glass elements. The upper section displays an ogee cornice above an oval pierced blind fretwork frieze, flanked by swollen turned pillars with wooden capitals. The square brass dial features corner spandrels, Roman numerals, and a silvered engraved face signed by the maker. Below, the trunk has an arched door flanked by reeded quarter columns, fitted with an original working lock, key with tassel, and a brass pendulum. The plain base terminates in ogee bracket feet and shows general usage wear consistent with age, alongside the main structure. Measuring 205 cm high, 56 cm wide and 29 cm deep, this tall freestanding timepiece serves as a practical floor-standing clock suitable for hallways, landings or living spaces in a traditional home.

Eighteenth-century Welsh longcase clocks, produced by regional clockmakers, typically feature solid native timber cases such as oak, housing brass or painted dials powered by weight-driven pendulum movements.

Georgian longcase clocks were commonly constructed with oak, mahogany, or walnut cases, featuring cast brass dials with decorative corner spandrels, steel hands, and internal iron weights.

Authentic 18th-century longcase clocks exhibit hand-engraved brass or early painted dials, clockmaker signatures indicating historic towns, period-correct joinery, and original weight-driven movement mechanisms.

Place a longcase clock as an architectural focal point in a hallway, stair landing, or dining room, pairing dark timber tones with neutral wall palettes for visual balance.

Maintain the oak case by dusting regularly with a soft cloth, applying beeswax sparingly along the grain once or twice annually, and avoiding environments with extreme humidity fluctuations.
