This nineteenth-century English shop fitting wall mirror belongs to the Victorian period. It comprises a rectangular moulded frame finished in black ebonised timber enclosing original foxed glass mirror plate and original pine backboards. The piece shows visible age through darker patination patches on the reflective surface and a simple linear profile along the framing. Measuring 135 cm high by 91 cm wide and 3 cm deep, the mirror hangs in either portrait or landscape orientation. In a contemporary interior, this functional furnishing serves practical dressing or decorative purposes in hallways, bedrooms, or living spaces. The neutral dark finish integrates smoothly with diverse interior design schemes, while the generous proportions provide substantial reflection and visual expansion within the room.

Shop fitting mirrors were large-scale commercial mirrors utilised in Victorian haberdasheries, tailors, and retail establishments during the 19th century. Ebonising involved staining timber a dark black shade to imitate ebony, providing a distinct frame that suited both commercial display and residential settings.

These mirrors typically feature softwood or hardwood frames treated with dark ebonised stains or black lacquers. The reflective glass was traditionally backed with silver or mercury solutions, which develop natural patination and foxing over time.

Authentic 19th-century examples often exhibit mercury silvering age marks, known as foxing, alongside heavy pine backing boards and traditional joinery. The frame will usually display wear to the ebonised finish on high-contact edges, exposing the lighter underlying timber.

A large ebonised mirror functions effectively as a focal point in a hallway, leaning against a wall or mounted above a console table. The dark frame creates visual contrast against light plaster walls while reflecting light to increase room brightness.

Dust the ebonised frame regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to prevent scratching. Avoid harsh liquid solvents on ebonised wood finishes, and apply dedicated glass cleaner sparingly to a cloth rather than spraying directly onto antique mirror glass.
