A set of eight provincial country dining chairs in the Chippendale style, dating from the late nineteenth century, comprises a pair of armchairs and six matching side chairs. Construction in solid English oak displays a medium brown wood tone with a visible grain, paired with gold silk damask drop-in seat upholstery carrying a patterned floral design. Each piece includes a yoke crest rail, a pierced back splat, square chamfered legs united by under-stretchers, and scrolling crook arms on the two armchairs. The armchairs measure 96 cm high, 63 cm wide, and 47 cm deep, whilst the side chairs measure 96 cm high, 48 cm wide, and 41 cm deep. Positioning this set around a dining table creates a cohesive seating arrangement in a dining room, kitchen-diner, or open-plan living space. The traditional English country house style blends easily with both antique and contemporary wooden dining furniture.

FAQs

Provincial Chippendale chairs incorporate the scrolled crest rails and pierced splat back designs popularised by Thomas Chippendale in the 18th century, crafted by regional cabinetmakers using locally sourced timbers such as oak.

These chairs are typically constructed from solid oak or walnut, featuring traditional mortise and tenon joinery, corner block reinforcement, and removable drop-in upholstered seats.

Authentic regional examples display hand-carved pierced back splats, peg construction at key joints, natural timber grain variation, and historical wear on the stretchers and leg bases.

Pair these solid timber chairs with a contemporary dining table to create a balanced contrast between traditional craftsmanship and modern minimalism.

Dust the woodwork regularly with a soft cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish twice a year along the grain, while vacuuming the upholstery gently using a soft brush attachment.
