A Superb Art Deco Cabinet on Stand by Heals

1920 - 1940
For Sale by Poirot Art Deco
Description

A superb and bespoke cabinet on stand in pollard oak by Heal and Sons, 1935. Made for and presented to Tom Worthington, who played a pivotal role in the post World War II history of Heal and Sons by serving as the visionary design consultant and director of Heals fabrics from the late 1940s through the 1970s.

This very well proportioned cabinet, with a two door cupboard opening to four shelves and a drawer below and attached to a four stretcher stand. Both the cupboard and drawer with a pair of rectangular chrome handles. The cupboard with a working lock and key and the presentation label to the inside of the right hand door. The ivorine Heals disc to the drawer.

Under his influence, the textiles division became one of the most influential commissioning bodies in British design history. Tom Worthington‘s great skill was his eye for avant-garde design. For example, in 1951 Lucienne Day approached him with an abstract pattern called Calyx, which had been created for the Festival of Britain. Worthington was initially reluctant, but it went onto win international awards becoming a massive commercial success and begun a 25 year relationship with Day creating more than 70 patterns for Heals. He greatly encouraged young talent and Art School graduates, bringing many striking, modern prints into British homes, including designs by high profile designers, Barbara Brown, Peter Hall and Colleen Farr.

All our furniture is professionally waxed and polished and thoroughly restored where necessary.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Art Deco cabinet on stand typically features geometric silhouettes, streamlined rounded corners, and decorative wood veneers mounted on an elevated wooden framework, popularised during the 1920s and 1930s.

Makers during this period favoured fine figured veneers such as quarter-sawn oak, walnut, or satinwood, paired with solid timber frames and nickel or chrome-plated metal hardware.

Authentic pieces often bear an inset ivory, bone, or metal Heal & Son makers disc, alongside distinctive design traits like high-grade book-matched veneers and precise dovetail joinery.

Position the cabinet as a focal piece in a living or dining area, balancing its warm wood tones against neutral wall palettes and sleek modern lighting.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly along the grain, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and moisture.
