This late 19th-century English wall mirror exhibits a French Chateau style, measuring 69 cm high, 54 cm wide, and 4 cm deep. The piece comprises a rectangular cushion frame enclosed by a giltwood moulding, surrounding a tapestry needlework border with a colourful embroidered design. Surmounting the frame is an ornate crest featuring a carved shell motif flanked by acanthus and scrollwork details. The aged gold gilding shows wear displaying hues of red, white, and gold, and the mirror retains its original glass plate. Suitable for placement above a sideboard in a living room, dining room, or hallway, this wall mirror brings classical decorative character to an interior. The cushion profile and intricate needlework create textural interest, while the arched pediment draws the eye upward. The combination of textiles, carved wood, and antique glass offers a refined decorative accent for traditional or eclectic spaces.

A cushion mirror features a central mirror plate surrounded by an angled, raised inner frame sectionhistorically referred to as a cushion profilewhich is often detailed with brass repousse, gilding, or decorative textile panels.

Nineteenth-century cushion mirrors were typically constructed using carved wooden foundations, gilded finishes, stamped sheet brass or repousse metal, and integrated woven tapestry or needlepoint borders.

Authentic period examples display natural age-related oxidisation or wear to the gilding, hand-worked joinery, and original wooden backing boards held by period-appropriate fixings.

Positioning a cushion mirror above a console table, mantelpiece, or sideboard creates a textured focal point that contrasts classical craftsmanship with clean modern lines.

Dust the frame lightly using a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth, taking care to avoid liquid cleaners or moisture near the textile border and gilded surfaces.
