This early twentieth century bracket clock follows a Regency style Chinoiserie design. The wooden case has a black lacquer finish decorated with hand-painted gold Chinoiserie landscapes, complemented by a white circular dial with Arabic numerals, a curved brass carrying handle, and a moulded coved plinth. Dobson and sons of London originally retailed the piece, which contains a Buren movement with a spring-driven jewelled platform escapement and measures 28 cms in height, 16 cms wide by 9 cms deep. Placing this timekeeper on a mantelpiece provides a practical clock that also acts as a decorative ornamental piece for a living room or study. The compact proportions allow it to sit comfortably on standard mantelpieces, shelves, or side tables while bringing traditional decorative detail to interior spaces.

Chinoiserie emerged as a European interpretation of East Asian artistic traditions, gaining widespread popularity in Britain during the Regency period. Clockmakers incorporated japanned black lacquer, gilded pagodas, and Asian figures onto classic bracket clock cases.

These timepieces typically feature a timber case finished with layers of dark shellac or varnish to simulate genuine East Asian lacquer. Decorative scenes were hand-painted using gold leaf, bronze powders, and coloured pigments, framed by a brass bezel and housing a mechanical movement.

Genuine period examples display hand-applied japanning with natural age wear, raised gesso detailing beneath gold leaf, and mechanical clockwork signed by historical horologists on the dial. The presence of traditional brass carrying handles and molded plinth bases also indicates period construction.

A black and gold Chinoiserie clock serves as a focal point when placed atop a marble fireplace surround, contemporary sideboard, or styled bookshelf. The dark lacquer and metallic accents contrast well against light neutral backgrounds or deeper heritage paint colours.

Preserve delicate japanned finishes by dusting gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding commercial polish, solvents, or water. Keep the timepiece away from direct sunlight, moisture, and fluctuating heat sources to prevent the timber from warping and the lacquer from flaking.
