Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 19th century Gothic Revival cast brass casket displays a warm brass colour with dark patination in the recesses. The rectangular box is heavy gauge and crisply cast, measuring 8 cm high by 15 cm wide by 11 cm deep. The lid and body feature profuse relief ornamentation including foliate scrollwork, relief animal figures, geometric mouldings, and corner piers. The piece stands on integrated corner feet. Suitable for placement on a sideboard top, this decorative box serves as a functional receptacle for small trinkets and treasures in a traditional or period interior. The heavy metal construction ensures durability for daily use in a domestic setting.

FAQs

Gothic Revival metalwork emerged in the nineteenth century as a reinterpretation of medieval European design. Caskets from this period typically feature heavy relief decoration, geometric tracery, heraldic animals, and architectural motifs inspired by Gothic cathedrals.

These caskets were primarily cast in brass using sand or investment casting techniques. Details were frequently hand-chased or finished with chisels, while internal structures often incorporated soldered seams and fitted iron or brass hinges.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces demonstrate significant weight relative to their size, natural oxidisation in low-relief areas, and slight irregularities from hand-finishing processes. Look for period-appropriate slotted screws, traditional hinge constructions, and smooth wear on resting surfaces.

A cast brass casket can be displayed on a sideboard, console table, or office desk as an accent piece. It functions effectively paired with dark wood surfaces, natural stone, or alongside contemporary ceramics to provide texture and historical contrast.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Avoid abrasive chemical polishes or water immersion, as these can strip the historical patina and discolour recessed detail work.
