This French Empire mahogany reclining wing back armchair dates from the 19th century and stands 127 cm high, 68 cm wide, and 68.5 cm deep. The frame is constructed from mahogany with a warm brown finish, supporting a high winged back and a stuff-over seat upholstered in gold velvet fabric. The piece includes individual brass studding along the trim, reeding and foliate carvings on the front armrests, an H-frame stretcher uniting splayed legs, and side metal ratcheted catches that enable the back to recline into multiple positions. Designed for a gentleman's library or study, the chair provides a comfortable and adjustable seating option for reading or relaxing. It integrates easily into a traditional or period interior scheme as a functional reading or fireside seat, offering both upright posture support and a reclining mechanism.

French Empire seating furniture, developed during the reign of Napoleon I in the early 19th century, is characterised by classical symmetry, architectural lines, and heavy timber frames such as mahogany. Chairs often feature sweeping arm supports, brass or bronze accents, and imposing silhouettes influenced by Greco-Roman design.

These armchairs were predominantly constructed with solid mahogany or walnut frames, fitted with iron or steel internal ratchet mechanisms for the recline function. Upholstery originally consisted of natural hair or fibre padding over coil springs, trimmed with velvet, leather, or woven damask, and secured with brass studs.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery, hand-forged mechanical hardware, and rich mahogany veneers over solid timber sub-frames. Look for original iron ratchets or brass side levers along the armrests, as well as period-correct construction techniques inside the frame base.

Position the armchair as a focal point in a reading corner or study alongside contemporary floor lighting and a minimal side table. The structural silhouette and warm timber tones contrast effectively against neutral backdrop walls or textured plaster finishes.

Maintain mahogany timber by lightly dusting with a lint-free cloth and applying a neutral beeswax polish periodically. Vacuum velvet upholstery using a soft brush attachment to prevent dirt accumulation, and keep the piece away from direct heat sources to protect the mechanical joints and timber from drying.
