A Small, Oak, Fusee English Dial Wall Clock Retailed by Harrods.circa 1890.

19th century
For Sale by M. C. Taylor
Description

A very attractive and small wall clock.

The 8 day duration, chain fusee movement with Anchor Recoil escapement.

Behind a 9 1/2" (visible) flat, painted iron dial with a cream coloured background and black inking. The outer divided minute track has triangular hour markings and it has Roman hour numerals. The centre has the retailer's signature of "Harrods Ltd. London S.W." in script. The hands are blued steel with the hour hand of spade style. Covered with a brass hinged bezel with flat glass and a silvered sight ring.

Contained in a beautifully French polished, light oak case of good colour and patina. The pegged back box has an access door to the right hand side and the curved bottom has a further locking, curved and cockbeaded door for pendulum regulating access.

Dimensions: 12 1/2" diameter x 6" deep.

Condition: The well-maintained movement is bright, shows no signs of wear and is in excellent working order. The dial has been restored by us because it had losses of paint and areas of poor patching however, for the purpose of authentication, I photographed it before restoration as evidence and the original base colour was perfectly colour-matched. The case is undamaged, unrestored and has excellent colour and patination. It has a superb polished finish. The lock works well and everything about this little clock sold by the world's most famous retailer is 'just so'!

The price is for the the clock with a full guarantee.

This Victorian wall clock is a small round English fusee timepiece dating from circa 1890. It is constructed from light oak with a French polished finish, featuring a warm brown timber colour, a hinged brass bezel, and a flat glass cover. The cream-coloured dial displays black Roman numerals, triangular hour markings on an outer minute track, and spade-shaped blued steel hands. Script lettering in the centre reads Harrods Ltd. London S.W. The circular wooden case includes a moulded surround and a pegged back box with an access door on the right side and a curved, cockbeaded door at the bottom. Measuring 32 cm in diameter and 15 cm deep, the clock fits well on a narrow wall space in a gentleman's library, hallway, study, or home office.

An English fusee dial clock is a wall-mounted timepiece featuring a circular wooden surround and a mechanical movement driven by a cone-shaped fusee mechanism to equalise power distribution as the mainspring unwinds.

Victorian dial clocks typically feature solid oak or mahogany moulded surrounds, cast brass bezels holding a protective glass front, painted cream or white iron dials, and brass mechanical clockworks.

Authentic pieces feature heavy cast brass movement plates connected by screwed or pinned pillars, hand-painted dials, cast brass bezels with glass covers, and a drive chain or gut line wrapped around a fusee cone.

A circular wooden dial clock can be positioned in a narrow alcove, styled above a hallway console table, or included within a curated wall gallery to introduce historic structure to modern schemes.

Ensure the clock is mounted level on a secure wall, wind the movement gently using a correctly sized key, and dust the wooden surround using a dry microfibre cloth and natural beeswax polish.
