Victorian Stunning 10" Dial Chain Fusee Wall Clock

19th century
For Sale by Clockwise
Description

Clockwise welcomes into its collection this beautifully crafted Victorian golden oak eight-day single fusee timepiece by George M. Hammer & Co., School Furnishers, 370 Strand, London, W.C. This impressive clock features a substantial 10-inch painted Roman dial, signed “Geo. M. Hammer & Co., School Furnishers, 370 Strand, London, W.C.” The dial is housed within a handsome solid oak case, distinguished by its dovetailed back box, lower and side access doors, and glazed hinged original cast brass bezel incorporating an inner silvered sight ring. The lower door retains its original working lock and key.

The clock is fitted with a superior chain-driven eight day fusee movement which has just been serviced so as such benefits from my three year guarantee. The substantial movement plates, anchor escapement and heavy lead-filled brass pendulum are characteristic of a well-made period timepiece, while the elegant blued steel hands provide an attractive and refined contrast against the painted dial.

The single fusee mechanism reflects the traditional approach to maintaining a more consistent driving force as the mainspring unwinds, contributing to the clock’s reliable timekeeping.

Operating in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Hammer company was an old English furnisher, in their words - 'Manufacturers of every description of school, institute, library, mission and church furniture!' Examples bearing their name are of considerable interest to collectors of Victorian clocks and associated craftsmanship. This delightfully well-proportioned example combines practical engineering with the understated elegance of a traditional London-made clock and would make a particularly fine addition to a collection of antique clocks or a period interior.

Clockwise specialises in longcase and bracket clocks and with global clients from the world of business, film, sport, royalty and aristocracy - yet more than happy with traditional clients - Clockwise has an unrivalled reputation for excellence and superb service.

Insured and tracked courier service available.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian fusee wall clock is a nineteenth-century English timepiece that uses a cone-shaped pulley mechanism to regulate spring tension, ensuring precise timekeeping across its entire winding cycle.

These timepieces typically feature a turned mahogany or oak timber surround, a brass bezel enclosing a glass lens, and a painted metal dial mounted over a mechanical brass movement.

Authentic examples possess heavy cast brass bezels, hand-painted Roman numerals, pegged wooden casing joints, and a distinctive fusee cone movement visible within the rear housing.

Position the clock centrally on a gallery wall, above an entry console, or within a dedicated study to serve as a functional architectural focal point.

Keep the casing dry and away from direct heat sources, wind the mechanism gently at regular intervals using the correct key size, and arrange professional horological servicing every five to seven years.
