Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1850s:
Shouldered brass plates with turned pillars: Victorian English fusee clockmaking.
Heavy cast brass bezel with pinned hinge: sturdy mid-19th century brassfoundry.
Convex painted dial with blued steel hands: styling used before flat printed dials.
Slotted steel screws securing the dial: hand-fitted assembly before modern fasteners.
Dark oxidised grain on the internal case timbers: many decades of exposure.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in Great Britain during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, dial clocks were developed as reliable timepieces for public buildings, railway stations, offices, and schools due to their clear, legible faces and sturdy cases.

These clocks typically feature solid mahogany or oak cases with cast brass bezels, painted iron dials, and steel hands protected by glass panels.

Authentic pieces generally show hand-cut mechanical gears, original painted dials with subtle surface wear, maker marks, cast brass hinges, and age-consistent patination on the wooden casing.

Mounting a traditional dial clock in a study, hallway, or kitchen creates a focal point that contrasts cleanly with contemporary minimalist furniture and painted neutral walls.

Keep the casing away from direct heat sources or damp environments, dust the wood and glass regularly with a soft dry cloth, and have the internal movement serviced by a qualified horologist every few years.
