This Victorian snuff box takes the form of a laced ladies boot, carved from wood with a polished finish. The piece displays a two-tone appearance, combining a glossy black lower section and toe with a natural brown wooden panel on the upper ankle, joined by a hinged lid at the top. Details include carved eyelets running up the front and original ribbon laces, with some sections missing, alongside a professional repair to the rear of the shoe. The box measures H 10 cm, L 15 cm and W 4 cm, making it a compact curiosity for display. In a contemporary home, this small decorative container suits placement on a bookshelf in a study, library, or living room, where it can be appreciated as a conversation piece among books and other small decorative items. Its traditional form and gentleman's library aesthetic blend well with classic or eclectic interior styling, offering a touch of period character to a desk, mantelpiece, or display cabinet.

During the nineteenth century, the taking of powdered tobacco was a widespread social habit, leading to the production of personal containers termed snuff boxes. Folk artists and craftsmen produced novelty variations carved into figurative forms such as shoes, boots, animals, and books, which served as conversational pocket accessories.

These boxes were predominantly hand-carved from dense hardwoods such as fruitwood, walnut, or boxwood due to their fine grain. Details were often highlighted using dark stains, lacquers, brass pinwork to represent eyelets, and small metal hinges to secure the lid.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces exhibit smooth, natural hand-wear around the lid mechanism and base where the item was held. Look for fine hand-carved details, micro-hinges secured with tiny metal pins, and original surface patination that cannot be easily replicated by modern reproductions.

A carved shoe or boot snuff box works well as a desktop curiosity, placed on a stack of books, or displayed within a glazed cabinet. Its compact scale allows it to fit neatly alongside stationery on an office desk or nestled among framed artwork on a bookshelf.

Keep carved wooden items away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent the timber from warping or splitting. Dust regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a small amount of clear beeswax polish annually to protect the surface finish.
