Gatcombe Antiques has dated this Regency Mahogany Writing Slope to the Regency era.

Extremely attractive inlaid brass-work, which is enhanced by the intricate grain pattern and colour of the rosewood. The top has a central vacant brass cartouche, matching the brass escutcheon to the front. The writing slope has been fitted with an antiqued burgundy leather skiver with gold tooling. Both writing slope flaps lift, to gain access to storage areas beneath. On the underside of the lower flap, there is a criss-cross arrangement of ribbon which has been reinstated. This was used for placing business cards, notes, etc. At the upper end, there is a central pen-tray with a removable pen-tilt, a nib tray to the right, a small lidded compartment to the left, and the inkwells in each corner. To access the secret drawers, firstly remove the right-hand side inkwell. You then need to press down firmly on the area marked with a piece of yellow coloured paper. This will, in turn, release a timber section, revealing the small drawers. The base has been re-lined with green baize.

Cleaned, re-waxed and polished. In excellent presentable condition and is a good example of a well-made writing box, made in the Regency period, a prolific time for this type of manufacturing in Britain.

Aftercare:
Cleaned and restored (where necessary) to a high presentable standard. Periodically wipe over
with a soft cloth. Occasionally, use a spray furniture polish containing beeswax to maintain
its satin sheen. Please don't use a silicone spray as this could have a detrimental effect on the
waxed surface.
