The design incorporates a single glazed glass door, floral marquetry inlay, gilt metal mounts, satinwood stringing, brass mouldings, and short turned feet. Two internal shelves are lined with red velvet, and a small keyhole escutcheon sits on the door stile. The cabinet measures 108 cm high, 76 cm wide, and 32 cm deep. It functions as a display unit for ceramics, glassware, and collectibles, fitting into a living room, hallway, or dining room as an accent storage piece.

FAQs

Originally designed to stand against the wall space between two tall windows (known as the pier), pier cabinets became popular during the 19th century as low, decorative storage units featuring glazed doors or open shelving for display.

Victorian pier cabinets were commonly constructed using solid hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, often finished with decorative floral marquetry inlays, glazed glass panels, brass or gilt ormolu mounts, and velvet-lined interior shelves.

Authentic 19th-century pier cabinets typically feature hand-cut marquetry or floral boxwood inlays, original brass fitments with natural patination, hand-cut dovetail joints, and period-appropriate interior lining materials such as velvet or silk.

A Victorian pier cabinet functions well in a hallway, dining space, or living room, serving as a focal display piece when curated with fine ceramics, antique glassware, or leather-bound books to contrast against contemporary wall colours.

Maintain the walnut veneer by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping the cabinet away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage or inlay lifting.
