19th Century Irish Carved Oak Castle Jewellery Box

19th century
Description

A solid oak jewellery box of large proportions in the form of a medieval castle, c.1880. Irish. The box is substantial, weighing 7.5kg.

The jewellery box boasts four solid oak turrets and an intricately carved floral drawbridge which lifts to reveal four dovetailed oak drawers. It is beautifully made.

It appears the drawbridge used to be unlocked via a hidden catch to the underside (the historic loss of the same evident underneath - please see photos). The loss of this catch means the bottom drawer can be pushed in a little further than the others. The drawbridge front lifts smoothly and sits perfectly flush meaning the drawers remain a secret even without the catch.

A fantastic thing.

This 19th-century Irish jewellery box adopts a Gothic Revival style, formed from dark brown solid oak with a visible timber grain. The piece takes the architectural shape of a medieval castle, incorporating four octagonal corner turrets finished with conical spire finials, small drawer fronts fitted with round wooden knobs, and an upright central panel decorated with relief carving of a flower and leafy stems. The bottom drawer extends outwards on the wooden base, exposing its dovetailed joint construction and interior walls. Measuring 36.5 cm high, 32 cm wide, and 27 cm deep, the box sits upon flat octagonal plinths beneath each turret. It functions as a decorative tabletop container suited for placement on a sideboard top within a bedroom or living space to hold small accessories and valuables.

A castle-form jewellery box is an architectural tabletop storage chest designed with turrets, spires, and carved facades inspired by medieval castles. Popularised during the 19th century under the influence of Romanticism and the Gothic Revival movement, these boxes served as decorative storage for jewellery and small personal items.

These items were predominantly crafted from solid hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or mahogany. Construction involved hand-carved relief panels, turned timber spires, and hand-cut dovetail joints on small internal drawers.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural wood shrinkage, uneven tool marks from hand carving, and hand-cut joinery. Natural oxidisation around drawer runners and timber joints also indicates historic age.

Position the box on a sideboard, dressing table, or mantelpiece to serve as a decorative focal point. Pairing dark timber surfaces with contemporary neutral backdrops or brass accessories balances historical character with modern styling.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying high-grade clear beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and extreme fluctuations in humidity to prevent wood splitting.
