Set of 6 English Country Dining Chairs 1880

19th century
For Sale by Billy Hunt & Co.
Description

Loving the look of this set of 6 matching well shaped English country chairs, just perfect for a barn, second home or country retreat. The frames are wonderfully worn in the right places with some great historic wear to the turned legs and interesting backs.

They sit well and are not as dainty in style as they look, being relatively weighty to be honest and perfectly usable around a kitchen table or maybe scattered around the home. The green short cut velvet seating is worn but usable if you want that lived in look. Our upholsterer can reupholster the 6 seats for £420 plus VAT - you would require 3 metres of fabric which we can assist in sourcing if you so desire.

As mentioned, expect chairs with some lovely wear and real character.

A charming set of 6 English stained beech chairs c1880.

Billy Hunt and Co is located on a large Victorian farm just a short country drive from the Rangemore village, a designated conservation area, which was built by Michael Thomas Bass in the 1850s to house the Bass Rangemore Estate workers consisting mainly of Victorian redbrick cottages and the occasional barn.

Our home is a classic Victorian designed and well equipped late 19th century 2 story red brick built barn of some 4000 sq feet nestled in classic English countryside, which enjoyed a careful full renovation in 2000. The estate still benefits being managed in the traditional manner with an Estate Manger, estate carpenter, gardeners etc. A rather delightful place to have as our work space.

Martina, there is no Billy at Billy hunt, has led the team since 2103 and is an interior designer qualified from The Inchbald School of Design London whose previous working life included such clients as Vertu, Aston Martin and Johnnie Walker to name a few.

Please do not hesitate to call or email if you have any questions on the pieces that may interest you - Many thanks Martina

Late 19th-century English country dining chairs are characterised by robust wooden construction, often utilising native hardwoods such as oak, ash, or beech. They frequently feature turned front legs, stretcher supports, and open backrests with spindle or slat galleries designed for everyday domestic utility.

Victorian country furniture makers predominantly worked with local timber including oak, Elm, ash, walnut, and pine. Seats were either solid wood, rushed, or upholstered in woven fabrics, horsehair, or velvet depending on the intended room and budget.

Authentic Victorian chairs typically display hand-turned stretchers, subtle asymmetry from manual woodturning, original pegged or mortise-and-tenon joinery, and natural age-related patination on the timber frame and underside joints.

These chairs pair well with simple contemporary wooden tables, concrete surfaces, or classic farmhouse dining setups. Their rich wood tones and textured upholstery add depth and historic contrast to modern neutral colour schemes.

Dust the woodwork regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply natural beeswax occasionally to protect the finish. Gently vacuum velvet upholstery using a soft brush attachment and address spills immediately with a dry cloth without rubbing.
