Description

An antique oval mirror, circa 1760, later transformed with elaborate hand-applied shellwork across its sculpted frame. The surface is densely encrusted with hundreds of individually arranged seashells, creating a richly textured mosaic in cream, blush, russet and deep blue-grey tones. Large scallop shells punctuate the composition at the crest and lower corners, while spiral shells, cone shells and smaller specimens are worked into symmetrical floral, starburst and geometric motifs. The shellwork follows the architectural outline of the original frame, giving the piece an unusually sculptural and highly decorative presence.
