Ritas Bazaar has dated this Georgian Engraved Glass Rummer to the Georgian era.

The decoration identifies the Grand Alfred Order of Old Friends, or GAOF. This was a British working-class Friendly Society rather than a regular Masonic lodge. Its members adopted elements of Masonic and Royal Arch ritual, lodge organisation and symbolism to express mutual financial aid, fellowship and trade solidarity. The crossed keys on the glass represent the Treasurer.

One side has a heraldic cartouche with a crown above and crossed swords at either side. Within is an elaborate interlaced cipher monogram, presumably for the original owner. Below the cartouche are the engraved numbers 7814 and 5, possibly referring to the original member and his lodge or division.

The reverse is centred by the All-Seeing Eye in rays above the Triple Tau. The initials G, O, A and F surround this emblem. Further engraved motifs include a crown and mitre, crossed keys, Jacob's ladder, square and compasses, an open book and a chequered pavement. Roses and thistles form the floral border.

An 1880 numismatic catalogue records the Grand Alfred Improved Order of Old Friends through a membership medal, whose inscription states that the Order was founded by Brother Sansum on 5 August 1818. The medal includes crossed keys, swords, a crown and a square, providing a close documentary parallel for the symbols on this rummer.
