Smooth, mellow patination to the mahogany arms: natural handling over many decades.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This set of eight nineteenth-century grand Regency mahogany dining chairs comprises a pair of elbow chairs and six single chairs, all constructed from warm brown mahogany with ornate brass mounts on the shaped centre splat and seat front. The upholstery on the newly reupholstered backs and seats features a gold patterned fabric. The elbow chairs have reeded shaped open arms, and the set stands on shaped reeded sabre legs at the front with outswept back legs, complemented by scroll backsplats and reeded legs. Each chair measures 84 cm high, 46 cm wide, and 43 cm deep. Positioned around a formal dining table in a dining room, these sturdy and structurally sound chairs provide practical seating for daily meals or dinner parties. The classic silhouette and warm timber tones integrate easily into traditional or transitional interior schemes, while the durable construction ensures stability for regular use in a family home.

FAQs

Regency dining chairs, originating from the early 19th century in Britain, typically feature classical proportions inspired by ancient Greek and Roman designs. Key traits include reeded legs, sabre legs, carved mid-rails, brass inlay, and upholstered drop-in or fixed seats.

High-grade mahogany was the preferred wood due to its rich colour and dense grain. Construction often incorporated brass stringing or marquetry, ebonised detailing, and horsehair padding beneath woven silk, wool, or damask upholstery.

Genuine Regency chairs display period joinery such as hand-cut mortise and tenon joints, original hand-carved details, and subtle timber shrinkage consistent with age. Look for patination on untreated undersides and evidence of historical re-upholstery.

Regency chairs function well as contrast pieces around modern minimalist dining tables or within traditional dining rooms. Pairing rich mahogany frames with contemporary architectural lighting creates a balanced scheme between heritage and modern design.

Maintain chairs in a stable environment away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood movement and fabric fading. Apply natural beeswax sparingly to mahogany surfaces along the grain to protect the finish without causing build-up.
