Magnificent 18th-Century 8-Day Brass Dial Longcase Clock by John Smith of Chester

Maker: John Smith, Chester (Active Foregate Street, c. 1750–1785)Period: (Circa 1770–1785) Movement: 8-Day striking movement (Hours on a crisp, resonant bell)

An exceptional, investment-grade English longcase clock of rare, slender proportions and premium cabinetwork. Signed by the highly regarded Chester maker John Smith, this clock has been meticulously preserved and recently underwent a comprehensive mechanical overhaul at a cost of £700. It is offered in pristine, showroom-ready condition, combining historical significance with absolute mechanical reliability. The Case & Cabinetry (Exceptional Quality)Unlike standard provincial examples, this case boasts elite architectural details and superior materials: Slender Proportions: A highly desirable, elegant footprint featuring a remarkably narrow trunk measuring just 35cm wide. Premium Timber: Constructed from rich, quarter-sawn oak displaying beautiful radial grain rays, expertly crossbanded in figured walnut. Architectural Detail: The hood features fluted pillars with gilded capitals beneath a caddy top, complemented by rare, conforming quarter-turned fluted columns built into the trunk .Originality & Finish: The case has bracket feet and is topped by its original finials in 24ct gold leaf.

A beautiful 13-inch square brass dial with an engraved center, working date aperture ("21"), a subsidiary seconds dial, a silvered chapter ring with bold Roman numerals, and ornate cast-brass corner spandrels. Crisply signed "Jn. Smith, CHESTER" to the lower edge. Mechanical Status: Fully overhauled and serviced by a specialist horologist at a cost of £700. The 8-day movement is in immaculate working order, keeping excellent time and striking cleanly. Completeness: Sold 100% complete with its original weights, original pendulum, and a winding key. The case retains a rich, warm patina with only minor, expected age-related wear consistent with a well-cared-for 240+ year-old piece.
