This early eighteenth-century longcase clock is an English country house timepiece made by Edward Hemmins of Bicester, who worked as a bell founder and gunsmith until his death in 1744. The oak case has a dark brown finish with a full-length trunk door, a moulded hood cornice, and a sturdy rectangular base. The visible dial features a silvered chapter ring with Roman numerals, ornate brass corner spandrels, pierced brass hands, and a visible pendulum bob opening near the base of the dial. Additional details include an exposed iron bell on the movement and a brass keyhole escutcheon on the trunk door. In a modern interior, this freestanding clock suits a hallway, study, or living room as a functional decorative timepiece. The case stands 203 cm in maximum height, providing a vertical presence against a wall. The thirty-hour movement runs on a weight-driven mechanism typical of the period, offering an authentic antique horological piece for daily use.

Thirty-hour longcase clocks were introduced in the late seventeenth century as a more affordable alternative to eight-day timepieces, primarily crafted for provincial households and country markets.

These clocks typically feature cases constructed from native hardwoods such as oak or walnut, paired with brass movements, steel pendulums, and cast brass dial spandrels with silvered chapter rings.

Authentic dials of this era are typically square, crafted from brass, and feature cast corner spandrels, an engraved silvered chapter ring, single or dual iron hands, and the engraved signature of the maker near the centre or base.

Position the clock as a focal architectural piece in a hallway, dining room, or stair landing, balancing its vertical height against neutral walls and contemporary minimalist accents.

Keep the wooden case away from direct heat sources to prevent shrinkage, apply natural beeswax sparingly to the oak, and have the mechanical movement cleaned and lubricated by a horological professional every five to seven years.
