Antique Edwardian Mahogany Inlaid Display Cabinet C1900

1900 - 1920
For Sale by MebleinUK
Description

A beautiful and elegant antique Edwardian mahogany display cabinet, dating from approximately 1900–1915 and designed in the refined Sheraton Revival style.

This is a particularly attractive example, featuring a slender upright form, delicate proportions and decorative inlaid detailing throughout. The upper frieze is decorated with a fine garland motif, while the central section features further floral and classical-style inlay.

The cabinet is fitted with a pair of tall glazed doors, each decorated with striking curved astragal glazing forming an elongated oval pattern. The glazed sides add further lightness to the design and allow displayed objects to be viewed from several angles.

Inside are three spacious shelves, ideal for displaying books, glassware, ceramics, collectibles or decorative objects. The light fabric-lined interior provides an attractive contrast to the darker mahogany frame.

A particularly desirable feature is the presence of the original key, which remains with the cabinet.

Very good antique condition with a solid and stable construction.

There are minor marks, light scratches and signs of wear consistent with age and previous use, but nothing that detracts significantly from the overall appearance.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Produced between 1901 and 1910, Edwardian display cabinets frequently feature lightened proportions compared to earlier Victorian styles, incorporating mahogany timber, delicate marquetry inlays, and elegant astragal glazing inspired by 18th-century revival design.

Edwardian furniture-makers utilised high-quality mahogany carcasses, often accented with satinwood or rosewood crossbanding and marquetry. Glazed doors feature hand-fitted astragal glass bars, and cabinets generally stand on tapered or cabriole legs, occasionally incorporating lower undertier shelves.

Authentic Edwardian pieces display fine, smooth marquetry flush with the wood surface, natural age-related wear, hand-cut dovetail joints on structural frames, and floating glass panes set within slender timber glazing bars.

Position the cabinet against a neutral or rich background wall to highlight the timber grain. Fill the glazed shelves with curated contemporary ceramics, art glass, or books to create a balanced contrast between traditional craftsmanship and modern decor.

Dust the mahogany surfaces regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the finish. Clean glass panes using a mild glass cleaner applied to a microfibre cloth rather than spraying directly onto the timber or glazing bars.
