Fine Set of 4 English Oak Dining Chairs 1930s

1920 - 1940
For Sale by Billy Hunt & Co.
Description

A recent find, we have a lovely set of 4 English oak dining chairs with the option of reupholstery of the seats if you wish. This set sits well with a good look - the front legs are particularly pleasing on the eye and the oak is a good colour.

As mentioned our upholsterer would be able to offer upholstery of the seats at a cost of £200 plus VAT for the set and you would require 2 metres of fabric which we are able to assist in sourcing samples etc or please feel free to locate your own - please mention when you place the order.

All the chairs are showing some pleasing historic knocks and bumps with the green short cut strie velvet tired. We have lightly beeswaxed the chairs to ensure they are ready for use.

A rather good looking set of fine quality solid oak dining chairs early 1930s.

Billy Hunt and Co is located on a large Victorian farm just a short country drive from the Rangemore village, a designated conservation area, which was built by Michael Thomas Bass in the 1850s to house the Bass Rangemore Estate workers consisting mainly of Victorian redbrick cottages and the occasional barn.

Our home is a classic Victorian designed and well equipped late 19th century 2 story red brick built barn of some 4000 sq feet nestled in classic English countryside, which enjoyed a careful full renovation in 2000. The estate still benefits being managed in the traditional manner with an Estate Manger, estate carpenter, gardeners etc. A rather delightful place to have as our work space.

Martina, there is no Billy at Billy hunt, has led the team since 2103 and is an interior designer qualified from The Inchbald School of Design London whose previous working life included such clients as Vertu, Aston Martin and Johnnie Walker to name a few.

Please do not hesitate to call or email if you have any questions on the pieces that may interest you - Many thanks Martina

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Dining chairs from this era typically exhibit a blend of late Arts and Crafts simplicity and Art Deco geometric detailing. They are predominantly crafted from solid oak with straight legs, sturdy stretchers, fluted or carved top rails, and upholstered drop-in seats.

Solid English oak was the dominant timber used during this period due to its durability and grain pattern. Seats were frequently upholstered in heavy fabrics such as velvet, wool, or leather over padded drop-in frames.

Authentic pieces feature mortise and tenon joinery, subtle geometric carvings, dark or medium oak patination, and functional stretchers near the base for structural support. Evidence of historic wear on lower rungs and frame joints also indicates age.

These chairs pair well with traditional solid oak dining tables or modern minimalist tables to create architectural contrast. The deep wood tones complement neutral wall palettes and natural textiles like linen and wool.

Oak timber should be treated with high-quality beeswax paste applied in thin coats to preserve the finish and prevent drying out. Upholstery should be vacuumed regularly with a soft brush attachment and kept out of direct sunlight.
