Set of Eight Mid-19th Century Bleached Mahogany Dining Chairs

19th century
Description

Set of Eight Mid-19th Century Bleached Mahogany Dining Chairs

English, circa 1850. Further Measurements Seat Height 52 cm, Seat With 44 cm and Seat Depth 39 cm

A handsome and particularly decorative set of eight mid-19th century mahogany dining chairs, now presented with a softly bleached finish that gives the timber a wonderfully understated, contemporary appearance.

Each chair has an elegant shaped and gently arched top rail above a finely pierced and interlaced vase-form splat, the flowing fretwork lending the chairs an attractive lightness and refinement. The generous drop-in seats have been newly upholstered in a natural linen, complementing the warm, muted tones of the bleached mahogany.

Raised on square tapering legs united by stretchers, the chairs retain the pleasing proportions and restrained elegance associated with 19th-century interpretations of Georgian furniture.

The bleached surface is especially successful, revealing the subtle grain and character of the mahogany while softening the formality of the original design. The result is a highly usable set which sits comfortably in both traditional and more contemporary interiors.

A very attractive and increasingly difficult-to-find set of eight matching chairs, combining period craftsmanship with a relaxed decorative finish. Equally suited to a large country kitchen, informal dining room or a more formal setting.

England, circa 1850

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-19th century mahogany dining chairs frequently combined elements of earlier Georgian and Chippendale styles, featuring openwork pierced back splats, sturdy squared legs, and supportive stretchers. Their solid timber construction offered durability alongside decorative carved detailing.

Cabinetmakers during this period predominantly utilised dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, and oak for framing. Seats were typically upholstered using horsehair padding covered in woven fabrics, wool tapestry, or leather, secured over drop-in or fixed wooden frames.

Authentic period pieces display evidence of hand-carving on the back splats, traditional corner blocks beneath the seat frame, and hand-cut mortise-and-tenon joints. Natural age-related wear, oxidation on non-bleached surfaces, and historic tool marks also signal genuine period construction.

Bleached mahogany chairs offer a lighter aesthetic that bridges traditional form with modern palettes. Paired with a contemporary oak or stone dining table, the neutral tone of bleached timber complements minimalist, Scandinavian, or modern country interior schemes.

To preserve bleached timber, avoid placing items in direct sunlight or near artificial heat sources to prevent cracking or discoloration. Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and apply a clear, natural beeswax paste sparingly to protect the wood finish without adding unwanted colour.
