Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French gilt mirrors from the nineteenth century often feature rounded top corners, clean cove mouldings, and subtle bead detailing surrounding the glass plate. The style prioritises tailored proportions and gold leaf finishes over heavy ornamentation.

These mirrors are typically constructed with a carved pine or lime wood core coated in layers of gesso. The decorative surface is finished using gold leaf applied over a clay base known as bole, with a glass mirror plate set inside.

Authentic period pieces show natural wear where the underlying red or grey bole bleeds through the gold leaf, particularly on high points. Additionally, original backboards are typically made of thick, hand-sawn wooden panels with age-appropriate oxidisation.

Place the mirror resting on a fireplace mantelpiece or positioned above a hallway console table to reflect light and create depth. The warm tones of gilding contrast well against neutral paint palettes, dark panelling, or contemporary minimalist decor.

Dust the frame regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth to prevent dust accumulation. Avoid using liquid sprays, chemical polish, or damp cloths, as water and solvents dissolve water-gilded gesso surfaces.
