This 19th-century Regency chiffonier side cabinet is built from richly figured mahogany in a warm brown tone with contrasting brass inlay. The piece stands on bracket feet and incorporates a raised open shelf superstructure supported by turned brass columns with decorative capitals. Elaborate foliate brass scrollwork decorates the frieze, the vertical framing of the cupboard doors, and the backboard of the upper shelf, while small keyhole escutcheons are set into the doors. Measuring 116 cm high, 67.5 cm wide, and 32 cm deep, the cabinet provides compact storage and display space. Positioned in an entrance hall, dining room, or sitting room, the upper tier provides a surface for displaying decorative objects, and the lower panelled cupboard doors open to a full-width interior shelf for storing tableware, glassware, or household items. The structure stands solid and level with intact brass inlay, offering refined proportions and classic Regency styling suitable for traditional and classic interior schemes.

FAQs

Developed during the early 19th century, a Regency chiffonier is a compact side cabinet designed for dining rooms or drawing rooms, typically featuring a raised shelf superstructure and enclosed lower cupboards.

High-grade Cuban or West Indian mahogany was predominantly used, often decorated with delicate brass stringing, brass marquetry, or crossbanding, supported by sturdy hand-cut dovetail joinery.

Look for signs of hand-carved joinery, original oak or pine drawer linings, minor shrinkage lines in the mahogany veneers, and hand-cut brass inlays that sit flush with the wood surface.

Position the cabinet in a hallway or dining area as a focal storage piece, using the top shelf to display ceramic vessels, modern art prints, or table lamps to balance traditional and modern aesthetics.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly while avoiding harsh chemical solvents around the brass elements.
