A Regency Period Bronze-mounted Mahogany Side Cabinet

19th century
Description

English, Circa 1820

This Regency-period cabinet is crafted from richly figured mahogany and adorned with elegant bronze mounts that highlight its refined decorative character.

The rectangular form is topped with a substantial, molded cornice displaying the warm tones and natural grain of the wood. The front is centered by a pair of glazed doors framed in mahogany and bronze mouldings, allowing a clear view of the interior shelves.

Surrounding the doors are finely cast gilt-bronze mounts featuring neoclassical motif rosettes, floral garlands, and stylized acanthus ornament typical of early nineteenth-century Regency design.

The cabinet stands on a shaped base with a bold curved apron, also accented with bronze gilt decoration.

The overall effect balances classical restraint with decorative richness. Both functional and ornamental, the cabinet was designed to display treasured books or objects while contributing warmth, craftsmanship, and dignified elegance to an interior.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency period furniture, dating from roughly 1811 to 1830, is characterised by classical Greco-Roman, Egyptian, and Empire influences. Key elements include clean geometric forms, rich dark woods like mahogany and rosewood, and decorative brass or bronze mounts.

Cabinetmakers during the Regency era predominantly used high-grade mahogany, rosewood, and zebrawood veneers. Accents and hardware frequently featured cast brass, chiseled bronze, or gilding alongside glass panelling for glazed doors.

Authentic Regency pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, original patinated metal mounts, fine veneer work, and classical motifs such as anthemia, paterae, or lion mask handles. Examining the timber grain and secondary wood quality inside drawers and backboards helps confirm period origin.

A low Regency side cabinet works well beneath contemporary artwork or a large mirror, anchoring a room without overwhelming the space. Pair it with minimalist lighting or modern ceramics to create an understated contrast between historical craftsmanship and contemporary decor.

Dust wood surfaces regularly with a soft microfiber cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish occasionally to nourish the timber. Clean bronze mounts gently with a dry, soft brush to remove dust without removing the natural antique patina.
