A Fine Pair of George II Carved Walnut Side Chairs

English, ca. 1745

Each chair with a scrolled top rail decorated with acanthus and floral carvings, above a shaped, carved and pierced splat, further adorned with acanthus motifs and terminating in a gadrooned shoe.

The seats are upholstered in a soft green antique linen fabric. The chairs stand on carved cabriole legs adorned with cabochons, leaf carving and scrollwork, terminating in carved paw feet.

The chairs retain a glorious colour and patina throughout.

This pair of eighteenth-century George II side chairs is made from warm brown walnut with green textile upholstery and brass studs. Each piece has a scrolled top rail with acanthus and floral carvings above a shaped, carved and pierced vase splat, a gadrooned shoe, and a soft green linen upholstered seat secured with brass-headed tacks. The front cabriole legs display cabochons, leaf carving, scrollwork and carved paw feet, while the rear legs are plain and raked. The timber displays a rich, aged patina throughout.
